Negative effects of stress
How does stress affect the body?
Having physical stress can affect the body in many ways. Stress is something that can bring physical problems if you don't take take the appropriate steps to deal with it.
There are many ways that stress can affect the body. The release of chemicals called catecholamine from the brain will include hormones that include adrenaline and epinephrine. This is a good thing if you're an adrenaline junky but a bad thing if you aren't.
With the extra adrenaline and epinephrine your heart may start to race, you can start shaking and your blood pressure will probably go up. This will occur when the body is feeling the stress and your lungs and heart are going to work harder to provide what your body thinks it needs. Your rate of breathing will increase and the lungs will take in more oxygen to prepare you for fight or flight.
The blood flow increases to get the body ready for other demands that stress brings on. You might also have dryness of the mouth. Blood flow will decrease to areas that are less important for basic survival and this will include the mouth. Most of us know that having a dry mouth can make it harder to talk or swallow.
Your skin might become clammy as the blood flow is diverted to vital organs and muscles. You can feel hot or cold when this happens. You will also find that eating is more difficult and you may experience stomach problems like nausea or cramps, particularly with long term stress but it can happen short term also.
Having long-term stress can lead to physical or psychological symptoms and harm to the body. Ulcers are still thought to be caused by stress by many people. Upset stomach and headaches are a problem if you get over stressed.
Stress develops slowly into more serious problems, which can include anxiety disorders or depression. You might become paranoid, angry and even tire easily. When this is the case, it's time to figure out what's causing all the stress symptoms and either go to the Dr. or find a way to get rid of the stress.
Stress can make a you irritable so you push your loved ones away. It can affect personal relationships and make it hard for people to want to be around you. No one really wants to be around someone who is crabby and irritable all the time.
Some people will get irritable and upset over the smallest things. They will get angry easily and find themselves yelling at the people who are closest to them. A person can start to feel like themselves again with a little help and understanding.
If you know someone who is showing physical symptoms of stress, talk to them and see if there is anyway you can help or anything you can do. Sometimes people who are stressed out don't even realize they are.
